Tiger baseball season to see first pitch Mon. as team hosts Elbert
Washington-Wilkes Tiger baseball is just four days away and the 2009 edition of the team has been involved with tryouts and practice since early this month. The familiar sounds of bats, balls, and gloves, along with infield chatter and cheers of fans will fill Tiger Field next Monday, February 23, when the Tigers host the Elbert County Blue Devils for the season opener beginning at 5 p.m.
Competing this year in Class A, W-W will play a full region schedule, unlike football and basketball in which the region is subdivided. At the end of the season, the top four team in Region 4A will advance to the state playoffs. Region teams include, Lincoln County, Aquinas, Georgia Military (GMC), Wilkinson County, Glascock County, Twiggs County, and Hancock Central, in addition to the Tigers.
W-W will also play a good complement of non-region games against the usual and traditional neighboring foes including Thomson, Jefferson County, Morgan County, Oglethorpe County, and Elbert County. Head Coach Rob Jackson will be assisted by Donny Swinson and Robert Wheeler.
