'Based on the Book' event raises over $1,000 for Mary Willis Library

Last Friday night's fund-raiser, "Based on the Book," raised more than $1,000 for materials and programs at the Mary Willis Library. Sponsored by Friends of the Library and designed and coordinated by Karen Stubbs, the event was ideal for both book lovers and movie buffs.

At 6 p.m., 50 ticket-holders gathered in the Backstage Wine Bar of Retro Cinema and Books to enjoy beverages, hors-d'oeuvres, and conversation. The vintage Hollywood décor lent an aura of traveling back in time to the forties. At 7 p.m., attendees moved to the auditorium and were treated to favor totes and door prizes. At 7:30, they relaxed in their seats to enjoy the classic film Rebecca.

Evelyn Bennett, president of Friends of the Library, welcomed everyone and extended thanks to Karen Stubbs and committee members Peggy Barnett and Nita Latimer. She also expressed gratitude to Dana and Richard Kibbey for hosting the event (complete with popcorn) at the Retro. "This night would not have been possible without the Retro and the Kibbeys," commented Bennett.

On Friday morning, Book Club members had gathered at Latimer's home to discuss the novel Rebecca, the Book Club selection for March. The 1940 film, produced by David O. Selznik and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, was closely "based on the book" written by Daphne du Maurier in 1938.

The Friends of the Library are grateful to everyone who made this fund-raiser such a success, including Paula Stevens of E-Clips for donat- ing doorprizes; Martha Coulter for manning the Friends' membership table; Sparky Newsome and The News-Reporter for publicity; and all the volunteers who provided refreshments and assisted with set up, clean up, and hosting.

The Friends of the Library owe a huge thank-you to Karen and David Stubbs, not only for organizing the event but also for underwriting the majority of the cost so that the profits could benefit the historic Mary Willis Library.
