Soil, groundwater testing set this week at Anderson's Service Station on Whitehall
Workers from TBE Group and GeoLab take core samples of the ground in various places around the old Anderson gas station. Soil and groundwater testing has started this week at the former Anderson's Service Station on Whitehall Street, the City of Washington announced Monday.
"As a component of the City of Washington's Petroleum Assessment grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, testing of the former Anderson's Service Station is scheduled to begin this week," Main Street Director David Jenkins said.
The Phase II testing involves soil testing and groundwater testing. A group of workers from GeoLab and TBE Group, using trucks and other testing vehicles, are on-site to drill temporary test wells.
Jenkins said that there are no known problems on the site. "There aren't any leaks or any threats that are known," he said. "The testing is taking place in order to secure possible clean-up funding and later redevelopment funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."
The testing is expected to continue all week. The city should receive full results from the tests by mid-May, Jenkins said.
