Successful 'Little League Day' held; players, teams win contest awards

The 2009 Washington-Wilkes Little League Day was held Friday, April 17, and was declared a big success. Many Little Leaguers went home with awards to prove it.

The evening began with the "Running the Bases" for Tee Ball and Mighty Mites. First place winner in the Tee Ball competition was Wykeem Danner; and second place went to Jake Newsome. The Mighty Mites first place winner was Zanila Booker; and second place was Jamiaha May.

There were two age categories in the Girls Softball pitching. First place winner for the 11-12-year-olds was DJ Martin; and second went to Madison Powell. First place winner in the 13-16 age group was Gabby Lavender.

The Girls Softball Homerun Derby had two age groups. First place winner in the 11-12-year-old division was Haley Lavender; and second place was Peaches Echols. First place winner in the 13-16-year group was Gabby Lavender; and second place was Lauren Roberts.

In the Baseball Pitching Contest for ages 9-12, the first place winner was Melik Young, and second place was Brannon Saggus.

In the Baseball Homerun Derby for ages 9-12, Donald Saggus was first place winner; and Brannon Saggus was second place.

The team that sold the most raffle tickets was the Tiger Tee Ball team. They will be treated later in the season to an Atlanta Braves game.

The officers of the Washington- Wilkes Little League expressed appreciation to everyone who made this year's event a great success; to individuals and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle; and to all the players, parents, and volunteers. A special thanks went to B.C. Kennedy for providing music and entertainment throughout the evening and to Jesse Echols who opened the event by singing the National Anthem.
