Saturday's Washington Art Stroll to bring fun, varied arts and artists to downtown
The inaugural Washington Art Stroll Saturday will offer fun, different art forms, and artists demonstrating their unique crafts at each stop along the all-day stroll through downtown Washington.
"Artists will be demonstrating their talent," said Anne Jenkins, "for example, at the Art Gallery La Place, the talented duo Kathleen and Craig Gill of Gill Glass will show you how they braid glass in the morning, and in the afternoon, potter Tina McCullough will throw pots on the wheel. At Funhouse Designs, metal artist Jeff Macchia will reveal some of his secrets in creating outdoor art. Also at Funhouse Designs, Diana Smith will also be demonstrating how she paints gourds. And Up at the Loft, Laura Connely will paint and Bob Connely will demonstrate his sculpture techniques.
At each stop along the stroll, traditional Southern wines will be available for tasting. "There will be wine tasting at each location courtesy of Courson's Winery in Sparta. They make traditional Southern berry wines such as blackberry and the grape varietal muscadine," Jenkins said.
Visitors may have coupons stamped at each stop on the Stroll, she said. "When you have filled the coupon you get a free drink with lunch at The Talk of the Town or a free glass of wine with a meal at the Washington Jockey Club."
The Art Gallery La Place will have information on the tour and all the locations can supply coupons. "There's fine art, folk art, metal art, spectacular gourd art and jewelry," Jenkins said. "So come and do the stroll, buy affordable local art, watch the demonstrations and enjoy a glass of something nice at each studio."
An added bonus will be the showing of a 30-second video snippet of "A Narrative of Wilkes County, Georgia," the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation's DVD collection of local memories.
If walking becomes a problem, golf carts will be available for transportation to various locations. All the studios and the galleries will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call 706- 486-6808 or 706-678-6258, or see WashingtonArtStroll.com.
