Funeral services for James Roy Vandiver, 67, of Denton, N.C., were held Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C., with Rev. Jeff Lamb and Rev. Jonathan Burris officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. He died Friday, June 5, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Mr. Vandiver was a native of Crawfordville and was the son of Frances McAvoy Vandiver and the late Jim Vandiver. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of 16 years during the Vietnam War where he served in the 82nd Airborne. He retired from Electra-Finishing Inc. of Asheboro and was a member of the Farmer Missionary Baptist Church. He served the church for 26 years in various positions including Sunday School superintendent and deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Stein Vandiver of Denton; his mother, Frances M. Vandiver of Thomson; a son and his wife, Keith and Sharon Vandiver of Asheboro, N.C.; a daughter and her husband, Tina and Philip Carter of Asheboro; a grandson, Jeremy Kowalski of Leadville, CO; two granddaughters, Raechel Kowalski of Greensbooro, N.C., and Lexi Toler of Denton, N.C.; a brother, Vernon Vandiver of Washington; and a sister, Frances Kitchens of Thomson.
