Team grateful for support, needs even more

TO THE EDITOR:

I would once again like to thank the citizens of Washington and Wilkes County for their continued support of our youth.

The Washington-Wilkes Little League program is a continuing success due to the constant effort of the Little League president and officers, coaches, teams, parents, and of course, the community. As a parent of two of those kids, I'd like to express my appreciation for everyone's hard work and dedication to the children.

We are now in the "All-Star" stage of Little League and have teams in local district tournaments as well as at least one team journeying to the state level. The Senior Girls Softball Team will be competing in Rabun County beginning July 11, for the state championship and the opportunity to advance to the next level of competition.

The girls will need to stay in the area in order to be available for tournament functions and games. Due to the decline of the local economy, the sponsorships of Little League programs were severely down this year and no extra money is available for these competitions.

The girls have been out asking for donations in addition to selling funnel cakes and sweet tea at the district tournament this past weekend. The team will also have a booth at the July 3 celebration on The Square, selling baked goods and pizza by the slice, and face-painting in an effort to raise the funds they need for this trip.

We, the coaches, team members, and parents of these girls, would appreciate any support you can offer these girls as they move on to this next level of competition. Anyone wishing to make a donation to help support this team can contact Donna Chafin at Tena's or Carol McTier at Rayle EMC.

Anything would be appreciated. Buy a cookie Friday night; drop a dollar in the donation jar; or say a prayer for a safe trip and successful competition.

Regardless of the outcome, we are proud to be the Washington-Wilkes Little League Senior Girls All-Star Softball Team.

Members are Cayla Gilland, Nikki Freeman, Paige McAvoy, Mallory Powell, Lauren Harrison, Hannah Ward, Ashley West, Toi Jackson, Gabby Lavender, Alaina Weber, Loni Thompson, Angel Heard, Lauren Chafin, Hannah McTier, Amber Warren, and Scott Chafin.
