Hospital regeneration outlined

According to Goldman, the plumbing at the hospital was literally rotting away beginning about six years ago.

Storyteller slated to entertain July 7 at library, 10 a.m.

Police, W-WPRD to sponsor bike rodeo for children 7-13
      The Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department and the Washington Police Department will sponsor a bike rodeo July 7 on the track adjacent to the recreation center. The rodeo is for children ages 7-13 and is designed to give them tips and instructions on bicycle safety. Games and fun activities will be included. and free helmets will be given away.

      As motorists take to the roads this week for the July Fourth holiday travel period, the Georgia State Patrol is reminding drivers to plan their travels carefully, keeping safety as the number one priority. The 78-hour holiday period begins today (Thursday) at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight Sunday, July 5.

Young Farmers go on tour
     The Wilkes County Young Farmers Association held its annual Georgia Summer Tour in Rome, Georgia, June 20-21. Those attending toured Genex, an AI facility for bulls; Burt's Beef, a grass fed beef facility owned by Teddy Gentry, a singer in the former Alabama band; and Tennessee River Music, the farm of former Alabama lead singer Randy Owen. Attending the tour were Eric, Jennifer, Ethan and Eli Holton; Herman and Amelia Wheatley; Kyle, Kim, Colton, and Whitney Bearse; and Shane, Amy, Lindsey, and Walker Moore.

Congregation will go back to church at Booker's Chapel
      Rev. Dante Smith, pastor of Booker's Chapel Baptist Church, and members of the congregation have announced that they will be going back into their church on Sunday, July 5. The church was damaged in recent severe weather. "We are very happy and blessed to go back into the church," said the pastor. "Services will begin at 12:30 p.m., and it will be a new beginning for us.

AgGeorgia Farm Credit redeems $10.5 million to member/borrowers
      AgGeorgia Farm Credit, a Georgia agricultural lending cooperative, has redeemed $10.5 million of allocated retained earnings to its member/borrowers. Earlier this year the company returned $5.1 million in patronage to members who did business with the cooperative in 2008.

      This rare-looking spotted female is friendly and calm. She should be a good companion dog. She is spayed and vaccinated. She needs a loving home. Although a dog's barking can be irritating, don't discourage him from barking at strangers. He considers it his duty to protect his family from uninvited visitors.

Donations make camp trip possible for 11 youngsters
     Eleven Wilkes County campers attended the Salvation Army's annual summer camp at Camp Grandview the week of June 15 including (front row, l-r) Maleekia Wright, Dyneshia Williams (winner of the camp singing award), Danielle Tate, Jazquanna Williams, Caitlyn Tate, (back) Christopher Crew, Wyatt Moore, Christian Moore, Zachary Moore, Pharoah Williams, and Hallie Sargent. In collaboration with the Salvation Army, the camp was funded by donations from the community including the Adult 1 Sunday School Class at Phillips Mills Baptist Church, the Washington Optimist Club, the Washington Rotary Club, the Cornelia Johnson Circle, the Mary Burton Primetime Sunday School Class, and the Washington Kiwanis Club.

It was reported that the family was run out of Mexico by the Swine Flu and had to detour to their eastern Caribbean cruise aboard the cruise ship "Glory!

      Perhaps you have heard that "the daddy-longlegs is the most poisonous spider, but it can't harm humans because its mouth is too small." Although this comment sounds interesting, it is false. Daddy-longlegs (also called harvestm men) have eight legs like other arachnids, but they are not true spiders. True spiders have two body parts and eight eyes.

CSRA unemployment rises to 9.5% during month of May
      The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) has reported that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) rose to 9.5 percent in May, up nine-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 8.6 percent in April.

Teaches lesson on internet scams
     Steve Foster (left), a crime scene specialist for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, warned members of the Washington Rotary Club to be very cautious when reading and responding to internet or email offers or requests for personal information. He said that while there are remedies for some scams such as purchases with no delivery, or identity theft, there are others for which there is no remedy. These include the common email lottery scam, threats, and "Spanish Prison" type scams. Foster urged anyone with a complaint about internet crime to file a report at www.ic3.gov. Roger Walker was program host for the day.

Volunteers work Saturday to keep battle site looking good
      With a section of underbrush cleared around the hill of the Kettle Creek battle site, a local volunteer team gave the new growth of vegetation a Roundup weed treatment for a continued park-like appearance.

Todd Long is named Director of Planning for Georgia's DOT
      Todd Long has been named Director of Planning for the Georgia Department of Transportation, according to an announcement by Governor Sonny Perdue who made the appointment. The position was created by the General Assembly this spring with the passage of Senate Bill 200.

Even legal fireworks should be used with caution
      While sparklers and similar nonexplosive fireworks are legal in Georgia, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John W. Oxendine is urging citizens to use extreme caution to avoid injuries and fires when using fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday.

New Farmers Market sees crowds
      Farmers Market vendor and organizer Sandy LeGette welcomes customers Saturday morning to the new Farmers Market behind the Wilkes County courthouse. A dozen vendors set up in the shade early Saturday and saw a good stream of customers all morning. "This is growing every week," LeGette said.

Rabies vaccinations now available all month, with 1-day clinic July 11
      To fight the upsurge in rabies cases, the Wilkes County Health Department and the Wilkes County Animal Shelter will hold an all-day rabies clinic Saturday, July 11, behind the Wilkes County Courthouse and veterinarians will be administering rabies vaccinations to all pets at a reduced rate.

12th Annual Fourth of July Parade to kick of Saturday at 8 a.m. sharp
      The twelfth annual Independence Day Parade will be held on July 4 at 8:00 a.m. at Fort Washington Park (behind the Courthouse). Made up of walkers, bicycles, strollers, scooters, and animals on leashes, the parade will form at the park and move to The Square, then proceed down to Liberty Street, east to Jefferson Street, and back to the Park.
