New Beginnings
      Jacob Daniel Durham Mr. and Mrs. Chad Durham of Washington announce the birth of their son, Jacob Daniel, on Thursday, June 18, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Jake, as he will be called, weighed 6 lbs. 15 ozs. and was 19 inches long. He has a brother, Hunter Lee, who will be four in September, and an eighteen-month-old sister, Kailee Grace.

Reese Bailey enjoys birthday celebration at lake on June 13
      William Reese Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Bailey, celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday, June 13. Reese enjoyed a boat party on his parents pontoon boat at Elijah Clark Lake. The boat was decorated with Spiderman and Batman balloons. Everyone had lunch and Reese opened his gifts. The rest of the afternoon was spent swimming and riding the tube behind the boat.

Wares return from trip to Canada, stopover in Ohio
      Norris and Frances Ware were among 44 travelers on a wonderful trip with Ionosphere Tours of Anderson, S.C. The group left June 22 and spent their first night in Charleston, W.Va. Tuesday they arrived in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. There they boarded the Maid of Mist and took the boat ride to Horseshoe Basin, passing directly in front of the Falls.

      The Washington Presbyterian Church, will have Vacation Bible School beginning Sunday, July 12, and continuing through Friday, July 17, from 5:45 until 8:30 p.m. Children ages pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade are invited to attend and enjoy Gully Games, Cavern Crafts, Shadow Science, Sagebrush Storytelling, and Red Rock Rhythm.

      The beautiful country home of Chan and Phyllis Drake was the scene of the 50th year class reunion of Washington-Wilkes High School Class of l959 Saturday, June 13. As guests entered the drive, they were greeted with a "Welcome" sign on Mr. Drake's 1930 Model A Ford.

     The First United Methodist Church held its annual Vacation Bible School June 7-11 with approximately 105 in attendance. This year's theme was "Camp E.D.G.E: Experience and Discover God Everywhere." Everyone had a great time learning about all the exciting ways to experience and discover the greatness of God everywhere!

      Strange animals have been seen around Wilkes County lately. I noticed in last week's News-Reporter that Carol Bolton saw a black bear. Well, I did too. I turned in at the road that goes by the J.W. Thornton home and a creature dropped from a low branch of a tree beside the road.

      Alex and Kay Tyler have returned from a tour of Scotland. They took a tour of three castles, the Crathes Castle and gardens, Glamus Castle (the homeplace of the late Queen Mother), and Edinburgh Castle, and actually spent two nights in another castle.

      Our day at Ebenezer Baptist Church was a good one. Dr. Dupree presented the children's story and ages 3-5 were dismissed to pre-school church led by Teresa Kemp and Miranda Nelson. Lauree Shelton kept the nursery. The sermon was on tithing: "Do people rob God?," from Malachi and Matthew. Bill Fair read the scripture and also gave his testimony on tithing.

      We had a very good attendance at Clifford's Grove Baptist Church Sunday. The number of small children has increased and it thrills Rev. Martin when they gather up for storytime. We all receive a blessing just watching them. .Last Sunday night, Trudy and John Sutherland enjoyed having supper with Brad and his friend, Blain McMichael, in Augusta. .

      Sardis Baptist Church had a good service Sunday morning with George Pate filling in for Rev. Jim Newsome who was called back to Florida to conduct a funeral. Karan accompanied him on the trip. Joyce Fry led in the congregational singing as Courtney Gunter played the piano.
