City Councilman Pamela Eaton asks city voters for a fourth term
EATON Three-term Washington City Councilman Pamela L.G. Eaton has announced her candidacy for the District 2 seat she now holds.
"I am announcing that I will be a candidate for re-election to the City Council of Washington in the election to be held November 3. Having served on Council for three terms, I believe that our great city is on the right track for the future and want to continue to help maintain that direction.
"City Council has undertaken several major projects which, when complete, will improve the quality of life for all citizens of Washington. The Southwest Washington Redevelopment Plan will provide opportunities for some 20 families to own their homes in a nice neighborhood. Again, the residents will own their homes, not live in a home owned by any government entity. Several new homes are also being built in and around town, and major renovations to others point to the success of our efforts. The development of the Pope Center into a state-of-the-art conference center is helping our economic development opportunities. These actions are all ongoing while we continue to protect and preserve our historic and natural resources.
"In this period of hard times, jobs are what remain important. I understand that, and continue to work along with the Payroll Development Authority to help bring new jobs to the community. Atlanta Fiberglass and the expansions at Pliant and Ruffin Flag are examples.
"I remain committed to the Downtown Development Authority which continues to help with the ongoing redevelopment and revitalization of our downtown.
"The refurbishment of our water treatment plants will begin this year using, for the most part, grant money, and is a result of recognizing issues and developing a course of action and planning for the future.
"I understand our codes and policies and how crucial it is to enforce them. It is also important for local government to examine every issue to determine if it is an opportunity to build our community and help develop our leaders in a positive sense.
"I understand programs that focus on the various functions of local government, such as our successful recycling program, the preservation of our historic properties, and our form of government including the roles of mayor, city council, city administrator, the city departments, and all those with whom we interact.
"I greatly appreciate your calls, your comments, your concerns, and I hope that I have served you well. Through these hot summer months and into the fall, I hope that you will consider supporting me once more. It is of the utmost importance that we continue to work together for the benefit of our great city - Washington."
Note: Candidates for the fall election are reminded that an announcement article of their intention to seek office will be run free of charge in The News-Reporter one time.
