Volunteers needed for Recovery

Volunteers are needed in Wilkes County to help cancer patients on their road to recovery.

The next Road to Recovery training is scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, from 2-3 p.m. at the Mary Willis Library.

The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program provides transportation for cancer patients in Wilkes County who have no means of transportation, said Summer Garrison. "This vital patient service program is in need of volunteers who are willing to volunteer their time and personal vehicle to drive cancer patients to and from their lifesaving cancer treatments. Volunteers provide an essential and necessary service. You may be able to volunteer one day a week or one day a month it doesn't matter. Even the greatest medical advancement is useless if the patient cannot get to treatment."

The requirements to become a Road to Recovery driver are very simple, Garrison said. "Requirements include attending a one-hour training class, a good driving record, a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition."

For more information or to sign up for the training, contact Garrison, American Cancer Society partner, at 866-227-0904 (toll free). Please RSVP by Monday, July 27.
