Sheriff tells of operations

2009-08-06 / Personalities

Wilkes County Sheriff Mark Moore, who has been in law enforcement for 35 years, told the Washington Kiwanis Club that the Sheriff's Office is a constitutional office in Georgia and most employees serve at the discretion of the sheriff. The duties of the Sherriff's Office, he said, include law enforcement, detention, and serving the courts of Wilkes County. Moore reported that the inmate population of the Wilkes County Jail runs from 25-70 and currently stands at 50. Wilkes County houses also about 95 percent of Taliaferro County's inmates. Sherriff Moore also said his office's budget for 2010 is $1,690,000, of which about 51 percent is operating costs and 49 percent is the cost to run the jail. Recent changes in the operation of the Sheriff's Office include 12-hour shifts for deputies and jailers, a computerized record system, the moving of old records to a safe archive storage, inter-departmental training, and the use of part-time staff as fill ins. Moore said that several challenges include keeping burglary and theft down and working hard on illegal drug issues. Ross Maynard was program host.
