Qualitying ends Fri. for city offices in Washington, Rayle

Qualifying for the City of Washington General Municipal Election on November 3 began Monday, and will end at noon on Friday, September 4.

Candidates are also qualifying for two seats on the Rayle city council this week.

Washington City Clerk Debbie Danner said that qualifying opened Monday, August 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily and will end at noon on Friday, September 4.

Qualifying will be done at the Office of the City Clerk in City Hall, and the qualifying fee is set at $108. In Rayle, qualifying started Monday at 8:30 a.m. and will continue through 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Rayle City Hall.

The November voting in Washington will elect two council members from District 1 and one member from District 2. The terms of incumbent Councilmen Rev. G.L. Avery and Maceo Mahoney from District 1, and Pamela L.G. Eaton from District 2 will expire in December 2009.

Several candidates for the two District 1 seats have announced, including incumbent Avery, Michael A. Wylie, Marion Tutt Jr., and Kimberly Rainey.

Eaton announced her candidacy for a third term as District 2 councilman. She is as yet unopposed.

By Tuesday afternoon, all incumbents and most challengers had qualified already, Danner said.
