Pope's Chapel plans annual homecoming for October 4
Pope's Chapel will hold its annual homecoming service on Sunday, October 4, at 11 a.m. Rev. Dan White, pastor of North Columbia Church of Appling will be the guest speaker.
Pope's Chapel has long been closed with no Sunday services. Those who have connections to the church, as well as the community, gather for this yearly worship service. A covered dish lunch will follow the worship service and all are welcome to attend.
Historic Pope's Chapel was organized in 1786, three years after the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War for American Independence and seven years after Elijah Clarke and the Patriots gave a resounding defeat to the British Tories at the Battle of Kettle Creek that saved the back country of Georgia from British rule.
The area around Pope's Chapel, near Broad River, became a popular place to settle for pioneers moving in from Virginia and North Carolina after the Revolutionary War and the end of the Indian threat to the settlements there. During this period, over 40 percent of Georgia's population was centered in Wilkes County.
When traveling from Washington, take Highway 17 North to Tignall. Go straight through the main traffic light in Tignall (at the North Wilkes Library and Museum, the intersection of Independence Road and Church Street) for 3.2 miles continuing North on Highway 17 (North Hulin Avenue in Tignall). Turn right on Broad Road (road number 193) and travel approximately 3.7 miles. Turn right on Pope Chapel Road, a dirt road, and travel 0.2 miles. The church building will be located on the right.
