This week, students have been taking progress-monitoring tests in their core courses to determine if they have learned what is required by the Georgia Performance Standards. The first quarter will end on October 9, and report cards will be sent home the following week. School will not be open on October 12.

How can you help our school? Eat pizza! Starting on October 6, 20 percent of your purchase at Pizza Hut between 5:30 and 8:00 p.m. will be donated to W-WMS every Tuesday night in October. You will need to take the coupons given by students at the door. The money raised will be used to purchase supplies and enhance the students' educational experiences.

The Junior Beta Club held its first meeting of the school year on September 29. Beta Club is an academic organization of students with at least an 80 percent grade average. The organization focuses on service. At the meeting, the 67 members discussed the book fair and the "Have a Heart" fund-raiser to benefit the Nancy C. Long Cancer Foundation. For "Have a Heart" week, October 5-9, students are able to buy bracelets for $5 that allow them to dress down for the rest of the week and the following week. They can wear un-tucked shirts, sunglasses, bedroom slippers, and hats. Teachers are paying $15 for the opportunity to wear jeans for two weeks. Beta Club students are also selling paper hearts for $.25 each which can be placed on the "Have a Heart Banner" in memory of someone or in honor of someone currently fighting cancer.

On September 30, the Tigers won 31-8 in a football game against Glascock County. The most impressive play occurred in the second quarter when Tomarkus Young ran 98 yards for a touchdown. At halftime, eighth graders who have been active in a sport this semester took the field to be recognized. The sports recognized were football, softball, cheerleading, cross country, and eighth grade marching band members. The honored students were escorted by their parents. Congratulations, students, and good luck in the future!
