SOUTHERN STYLE FOOTBALL with CLAUDE CLEATS

The Florida Gators are still perched atop the Dixie Dozen and the national polls, but Alabama is shaking the tree. Virginia Tech is separating itself from the rest of the unpredictable ACC, but Georgia Tech refuses to go away. South Florida is making a move in the Big East, but consecutive games against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia over the next three weeks could derail the Bulls.

There are some great games on tap this week.

Cincinnati at South Florida - The Bearcats and the Bulls have had almost two weeks to prepare for each other. Both are undefeated. Tonight's nationally televised clash should be one of the best games of the season. Cincinnati's Tony Pike completed 20 of 28 passes for 281 yards and two TDs against USF in last year's 24-10 victory. Pike is back this year, but the rugged Bulls defense will be ready. South Florida by 3.

Arkansas at Florida - The upstart Razorbacks have dispatched Texas A&M and Auburn with ease the last two weeks. There is bound to be a let-down by Florida after the big win over LSU. The Gator offense should have an easier time against the rather porous Arkansas defense than it did against LSU. Florida by 10.

Georgia at Vandy - The disappointing Dawgs travel to Music City to face the weakest team in the SEC. Georgia makes it 14 out of the last 15 over the Commodores. Georgia by 25.

South Carolina at Alabama - The Gamecocks have been living on the edge, but still have only one loss. The Crimson Tide is rolling toward an SEC West title. Bama should post a double digit win here. Bama by 13.

Kentucky at Auburn - Rich Brooks' Wildcats lost a heartbreaker in Columbia last Saturday and may have lost their starting QB Flartline, also. Auburn was embarrassed by Arkansas, but should be able to bounce back if the War Eagle defense plays just a little bit better. Auburn by 14.

Wake Forest at Clemson - The Tigers have had a week off to lick their wounds following the Maryland debacle. Wake, on the other hand, is gathering steam with consecutive wins over N.C. State and Maryland. The Tigers have more talent and the Deacons have better coaching, making this a tough one to call. I'll go with the home team. Clemson by 4.

Virginia at Maryland - The suddenly resurgent Cavaliers have a struggling Maryland squad squarely in their sights. No one can figure out why Maryland is playing so poorly since the Terps appear to be rather talented and Coach Ralph Friedgen has all the experience and credentials of a fine head coach. Virginia is hot and Maryland is not. So it's Virginia by 6.

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech - The powerful Hokies have won four of the last five in the series and appear to be getting better every week. The Yellow Jackets are outscoring their opponents in arena ball fashion. Virginia Tech has a tough, solid defense and that wins championships.Virginia Tech by 12.

Miami at Central Florida - UCF almost beat the Canes in Miami last year dropping a 20-14 decision. The second match-up in history between these cross state rivals won't be nearly as close. This is a much better Miami team in 2009. Miami by 20.
