School enjoying Red Ribbon Week; band members attend competition
October 26-29 is Red Ribbon Week at W-WMS where teachers talk to their kids about being drug free and everyone was encouraged to dress according to each day's theme. Monday, was "wear red day." Tuesday was "tacky day" and Wednesday was "hippie/'70s day." On Thursday, students are wearing blue and gold. Students are also encouraged to enter two contests to promote being drug free: a poster contest and a poetry contest. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, third, and honorable mention winners of each contest.
On October 23, all middle school students who passed science, math, reading, and language arts the first quarter participated in a "pass party" for their grade levels. These students spent about 40 minutes outside and enjoyed ice-pops and field games. Students are rewarded with a "pass party" each quarter.
The middle school members of the W-WCHS marching band attended their first competition at Collins Hill Eagle's Nest Invitational in Suwanee on October 17. The band was second runner-up in its division. "I picked the hardest competition for the band to attend and they did well for it being their first competition," said Jeff Thomas, band director. They will be attending their next competition at the "Old South Classic" in Newnan on November 7. Fourteen eighth-grade students participate in the W-WCHS marching band.
Katy Meech, eighth grade Georgia Studies teacher, was honored along with the teachers of the year for the other schools in Wilkes County at a reception in the W-WMS/W-WCHS media center, October 19. Jennifer Atkinson, W-WCHS science teacher, was awarded "Teacher of the Year" for the entire county.
W-WMS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is collecting used ink cartridges to earn store credit for computer lab supplies. Please bring your used ink cartridges to the school. Cartridges that will earn store credit are made by Hewlett Packard (HP), Dell, and Lexmark.
The W-WMS boys and girls basketball teams have started new seasons! Their first games are at home Thursday, November 5, against Lincoln County starting at 4 p.m. Come out and support the Tigers!
There will be no school on Friday, October 30.
