Road to Recovery to train on Tues.

Volunteers are needed in Wilkes County to help cancer patients on their road to recovery, and a training session is set for Tuesday, November 10, in Washington.

"The American Cancer Society has a wonderful program called Road to Recovery in Wilkes County" said Summer Garrison, American Cancer Society Staff Partner. "This program provides transportation to cancer patients that have no means of transportation, and the program is in need of volunteers in Wilkes County who are willing to volunteer their time and personal vehicle to drive cancer patients to and from their lifesaving cancer treatments."

The next Road to Recovery training is scheduled for November 10 from 3-4 p.m. at the Mary Willis Library. "Volunteers provide an essential and necessary service," Garrison said. "You may be able to volunteer one day a week or one day a month - it doesn't matter. Even the greatest medical advancement is useless if the patient cannot get to treatment.

The requirements to become a Road to Recovery driver, Garrison said, include attending a one-hour training class, and having a good driving record, a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

For more information or to sign up for the training please contact Summer Garrison at 866-227-0904 (toll free). Please RSVP by Friday, November 6.
