Not only is the Farmers Market still in operation behind the Wilkes County courthouse every Saturday morning, organizers say they're looking for more families to sell their homemade foods and hand crafts.

"Most people don't know they can just bring their hand-made crafts and homemade food items and sell them here on Saturday mornings," said Sandy LeGette.

"There's no charge for a table, and families have been making some good extra money on the side each weekend with products they made themselves."

With cooler weather, the market now opens at 10 a.m. each Saturday and is open until 1 p.m., but plans are to stay open all winter. "We plan to run right through the season, with heirloom vegetables, fall vegetables such as sweet potatoes, winter squash, field peas, boiled peanuts, okra, and eggs," LeGette said. "Vendors are selling canned goods, jellies and jams, fresh breads and pastries - all home grown and home made."

With Christmas coming, she said, now is the time for families to earn extra holiday money by making and selling food items or handmade Christmas crafts. "It's a great way to make a few extra dollars at Christmas time."
