'Operation Christmas Child' open all next week
      Christmas is arriving early all over Washington as a local church prepares to serve as a collection point for Operation Christmas Child. Soon, with the help of local volunteers, First Baptist Church will be brimming with festively wrapped shoe boxes full of gifts.

Art exhibit on display downtown; science classes wonder, 'Is this me?'
      W-WMS has an artwork exhibit at the Wilkes Eye Center on the Washington Square through this week. The work can be seen in the front windows, but if you go inside, you can see more of these students' artwork on the back of the display.

Christmas parade to be held Dec. 13; sign up now to enter
      The Washington-Wilkes Christmas parade will be held Sunday, December 13, at 3 p.m., using as a theme, "Washington-Wilkes' Winter Wonderland." The parade will line up at the Pope Conference Center on Lexington Avenue and will end at the Washington-Wilkes Elementary School on East Street, just off East Robert Toombs Avenue.

Athens Chamber Singers to perform at Trumps Dec. 3-5
      The Athens Chamber Singers will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the group with "Music from Around the World" -- Yuletide Musical Dinners, December 3, 4, and 5, at Trumps in the Georgian Hotel in downtown Athens. The dinners will be served in the Ballroom of Trumps and the singers will entertain throughout the entire evening with music of the season from around the world.

Young students enjoy petting zoo
      Kindergarten and first grade students at Washington-Wilkes Primary School enjoyed learning about farm animalslast week when Eric Holton coordinated efforts with the Wilkes County Young Farmers and community volunteers to take a petting zoo to the school's campus. Above, some of Amanda Woods' kindergarteners are shown having a good time with the animals.

Texas Instruments (TXN/NYSE)
      At a recent $23 a share, Texas Instruments is selling for the same price it brought in 2003. At the end of 2008 its net profit had more than doubled from the 2003 amount. Profit will likely be down in 2009 but this strong company will most likely do very well in an economic recovery.

New grant will assist Partnership, schools
      Amethyst Wynn, Executive Director of the Wilkes County Community Partnership, spoke to the Washington Kiwanis Club and told members about the new 21st Century grant that the Partnership and Wilkes County Schools applied for and received. The purpose of the grant is to provide funds to expand community learning centers outside of school hours, before or after school.

Tiger Band fruit on sale now through Tue., November 17
      The Washington-Wilkes Tiger Band is again selling Riversweet fruit from Florida as a fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale will be used to help the Tiger Band with projects and expenses. A variety of fruit is available including Ruby Red grapefruit, navel oranges, tangelos, juice oranges, and a mixed box of navel and Ruby Red grapefruit.

Team shows at Ga. National Fair
      Courtney Thackston, Megan Thackston, Shannon Thackston and William Thomas, Wilkes County 4-H Livestock Show Team members, finished their season by competing against some 130 contestants in the 2009 Georgia National Fair held in Perry.

Troopers investigate 20 traffic accidents during month of Oct.
      State Troopers from the Washington Post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated 20 traffic accidents during the month of October in Wilkes County. Sergeant First Class Andrews said the traffic crashes resulted in seven injuries. There were no traffic deaths.

Winter outerwear drive begins; distribution slated for Nov. 20
      The Wilkes County Unit of the Salvation Army in conjunction with God's Marketplace of Washington and the Bi-Lo store in Washington is sponsoring an outerwear winter clothing drive at God's Marketplace on East Robert Toombs Avenue.

      A new motion picture documentary, produced by a former resident of Washington, has received an award at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival and will be shown at a special screening here next week at the Retro Cinema.

Medallion honors MS victim
      Kyle Brown, president of the Washington Optimist Club; Sherry Hudson, president of the Washington Kiwanis Club, and Dr. Bill Robinson have presented a medallion to Alicia Hill, a victim of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The medallion was given to Dr. Robinson at the completion of his MS 150 bike ride which he completed in honor of Miss Hill.

'Tree of Love' to be sponsored by WMH Auxiliary
      The Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor its third annual "Christmas Tree of Love" during November and December. The Auxiliary will begin its annual celebration on Tuesday, November 24, during the Downtown Candlelight Shopping on The Square. A special ceremony will be held to light the evergreen tree in front of the courthouse with brightly colored lights.

Callaway retires from health dept. after 34 years
      Karen G. Callaway has retired from the Oglethorpe County Health Department following 34 years of service. Mrs. Callaway began her 34 years at the young age of 17 in 1976 as a clerk-typist. She retires as office administrator. Her loyalty to the county and the Northeast Health District will be missed.

Perfect attendance gets rewarded
     Washington-Wilkes Elementary School Principal Wanda Jenkins accepts Kids's Meal gift cards from Shanteka Hampton, assistant manager of Zaxby's on behalf of the fourth and fifth graders with perfect attendance during the first nine-weeks grading period, Jenkins said. "We wanted to reward all these children for their perfect attendance," she said. "Daily attendance at school is a contributing factor to high levels of academic achievement. We want to recognize the children for being at school each day and commend their parents for seeing to it that they are here each day ready to learn."

      All right. Who was the practical joker? I had a message on my machine from a Chinese man. He spoke perfect Chinese, not English. I didn't know if he wanted a vendor space at the festival or he had a wrong number. Naturally I couldn't return his call. Speaking of telephones, I hate cell phones, but know sometimes they are necessary.

Tignall's annual fall festival was 'awesome' with many popular features, entertainment
      WOW! What an awesome festival. The weather was perfect. The food vendors sold out of food and we gave our of parking spaces, which was great. The entertainment his year was exceptional starting with Amanda Range singing the national anthem. Gracen Ware and Sylvia Walker were wonderful. Sylvia has such a strong voice for someone who just became 10 years old.

      We had a real good attendance at Clifford's Grove Baptist Church Sunday. Rev. Martin had been sick during the week, but was able to come. He preached a good message and he enjoyed talking to the little children during storytime. ƒThe fall festival was well attended Sunday afternoon. The grownups enjoyed watching the kids having fun and playing games outdoors.

      Church Sunday morning with a very informative sermon titled "Freedom or Forgiveness" by Rev. Jim Newsome. The beautiful congregational singing was led by Joyce Fry with Pam Hall playing the piano. There were many praises and prayer requests given. The children were called to the altar for their message by the pastor.
