Evans Howell Harris
Funeral services for Evans Howell Harris, 84, of Crawfordville were held Thursday, November 5, 2009, at Friendship Baptist Church, Crawfordville, with Dr. Lucian Harris officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died October 31 at his home in Crawfordville.
Dr. Harris was a native of Taliaferro County and was the son of the late Elijah and Essie Stewart Harris. He was the third of their six children. He had a deep affection for Crawfordville where he received his primary and secondary education. He also became a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his death. He received his Bachelors degree in 1947 from Fort Valley State College; Masters degree in 1963 from Tuskegee University; and his Doctorate in Education Administration in 1968 from the University of Oklahoma. He served as principal of Murden High and Elementary School in Crawfordville; and was a professor at Tuskegee University and later, Albany State University. He returned to Crawfordville in 1992 where he was elected Superintendent of the Taliaferro County Schools until 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. Quinn-Harris; three daughters (from his union with the late Ann Hubanks Harris), and a stepson, Betty J. Harris, Linda H. Alexander, Patricia A. Harris, and David Quinn Jr.; grandchildren, Matthew Taylor, Kevin Alexander, Erica Holland, Tiffany Holland, Melissa Alexander, and Ryan Alexander; a great-grandchild, Anjelica Bryant; and two siblings.
Pallbearers included Ernest Harper, Melvin Roberts, William Stewart, David Quinn Jr., Kenny Beasley, and Jamal Walker.
McLendon Memorial Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
