Dr. Karp to teach on memory, nutrition at LIR meeting Wed.
The Washington Chapter of Learning in Retirement (LIR) has scheduled a session on memory and nutrition with Dr. Warren Karp as the speaker. The session will be held Wednesday, November 18, at 2 p.m. in the Parish House of the Church of the Mediator.
Dr. Karp is professor emeritus of the Medical College of Georgia, Medical and Dental Schools. He will review the many sides of the nutrition/memory question.
"As the population ages, many Americans are seeking ways of keeping their memories active and healthy," Dr. Karp says. "Unfortunately there are many quack nutrition remedies for improving memory, particularly aimed at older Americans," he continues. "These commercial nutritional treatments include specific vitamins and minerals or ingesting herbal and other dietary supplements. For example, does Gingko biloba really improve memory?"
Find out when Dr. Karp presents a review of evidenced-based nutritional principles and then discusses the relationship of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease to brain function and memory, as well as to Alzheimer'a Disease. There will be a time to ask questions.
Dr. Karp holds a PhD in biochemistry from the Ohio State University and a doctorate in Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia. He has served as director of the Nutrition Consult Service at the MCG School of Dentistry for more than 20 years. He retired as Professor, Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Graduate Studies, MCG.
Dr. Joe Harris, LIR Washington Chapter president, says that the chapter welcomes guests and that membership is open to those interested. This is the final session of the fall series.
