Community Learning Centers grant will help students in reading, math
      As we have passed the mid-term day of this grading period, students received progress reports on November 17 to let parents know how they are doing in their classes. The middle school chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently held a Krispy Kreme doughnut fund-raiser and raised over $1,000 for membership activities.

Christmas parade on Dec. 13 will have 'Winter Wonderland' theme
      The Washington-Wilkes Christmas parade will be held Sunday, December 13, at 3 p.m., using as a theme, "Washington-Wilkes' Winter Wonderland." The parade will line up at the Pope Conference Center on Lexington Avenue and will end at the Washington-Wilkes Elementary School on East Street, just off East Robert Toombs Avenue.

      Washington-Wilkes FFA Member Greg Callaway participated in the Georgia-Carolina State Fair in Augusta where he won grand champion and reserve champion with his steers. He is the son of Brian and Tonya Callaway of Washington.

Athens Chamber Singers to perform at Trumps Dec. 3-5
      The Athens Chamber Singers will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the group with "Music from Around the World" -- Yuletide Musical Dinners, December 3, 4, and 5, at Trumps in the Georgian Hotel in downtown Athens. The dinners will be served in the Ballroom of Trumps and the singers will entertain throughout the entire evening with music of the season from around the world.

     ... at a zoo in the Rocky Mountains Alexis Gioia and her News-Reporter recently spent several days in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and got up close and personal with a family of giraffes. While visiting Colorado Springs, Alexis also enjoyed ice skating at the U.S. Olympic Complex, ghost stories at the Miramont Castle, Boo at the Zoo, and the Cog Railway which took her 14,110 feet up to Pike's Peak. Alexis is the daughter of Dr. Bruce and Lynn Gioia. This News-Reporter is 1,278 miles from home.

'Tree of Love' to be sponsored by WMH Auxiliary
      The Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor its third annual "Christmas Tree of Love" during November and December. The Auxiliary will begin its annual celebration on Tuesday, November 24, during the Downtown Candlelight Shopping on The Square. A special ceremony will be held to light the evergreen tree in front of the courthouse with brightly colored lights.

      To ease the suffering of some local families at Christmas, the Washington Police Department will again sponsor its annual "Gifts for Children" campaign this season. "Christmas time is a wonderful time for many families," said Assistant Chief Theodosia Glenn. "However, there are families that are in such poverty they cannot afford to purchase gifts for their children.

Shoeboxes for seniors drive is aiming at reaching every senior
      After collecting a record 175 gift shoeboxes for Wilkes County seniors last year, this year organizer Margie Burke hopes her group can have a Christmas gift box for every senior in every elder care facility in the county. "This is our fourth year of doing 'Operation Love and Care in a Shoebox,'" she said.

      While traveling along the highway last Sunday night I noticed many places already decorated for Christmas. Did I miss Thanksgiving? Are we rushing things? It seemed when I was a child that Christmas was slow in coming around every year, but now we don't have to wait long. We never got a Christmas tree until a week before Christmas when I was a kid.

      Sardis Baptist Church enjoyed having George Pate as guest speaker Sunday morning in the absence of our pastor, Rev. Jim Newsome. Joyce Fry led in some good oldtime hymns with Pam Hall as pianist. The Shoebox dedication was very impressive as 10 children and youth proudly carried the boxes from the foyer to the communion table.
