Community Learning Centers grant will help students in reading, math

As we have passed the mid-term day of this grading period, students received progress reports on November 17 to let parents know how they are doing in their classes.

The middle school chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently held a Krispy Kreme doughnut fund-raiser and raised over $1,000 for membership activities. Also, the W-WMS FBLA is joining the high school chapter in a coat drive to benefit a local charity. Everyone is encouraged to bring gently used jackets and coats to Lise Kalla, W-WMS FBLA advisor, through November 24.

Wilkes County schools are the proud recipients of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant. This program is designed to assist those students who are experiencing difficulties in reading and/or mathematics based on state and school level assessments. The program will begin November 17 and will continue through the end of the school year. Students will meet every Monday through Thursday from 3:10-5:20 p.m. Bus transportation will be provided at the end of each day. Students will also enjoy a breakfast club Monday-Friday from 7:20 until 8:00. Students who attend will be able to receive additional help with homework and tutorial assistance.

The W-WCHS marching band participated in Newnan's Old South Classic on Saturday, November 7. The color guard, percussion, drum major, and band all received ratings of excellent and the band placed third in its division at the competition. "The students learned a lot and had a wonderful time. It was a great way to end the competitive season," said Jeff Thomas, director of bands. Fourteen eighth graders from the middle school participate in the Tiger marching band.
