Sandy LeGette spoke on organic gardening as she presented the program to members of the Washington Wilkes Garden Club Thursday, November 12, at the North Wilkes Library in Tignall.

Mrs. LeGette, introduced by Carol Daniel, displayed numerous varieties of winter squash and pumpkins as she talked about the benefits of organic gardening. She related how she and her family became involved in this method of growing vegetables with her son and chef, Ben LeGette. She noted different ways to prepare the varieties. Mrs. LeGette also told about the open-air Farmers Market where many in the county provide a variety of wares, vegetables, fruits and baked goods on Saturday mornings in an area behind the Courthouse. Members' interests were stirred as they asked many questions at the close of the presentation. Elizabeth Smith assisted Mrs. Daniel with the program planning.

Prior to the program Mary Webster presided and welcomed everyone. She led the Pledge to the Flag and Sally Kennedy offered an inspiring devotional.

Reports were given by officers and Celeste Adams distributed the yearbooks she had compiled.

In the spring Linda Burns had presented members with tomato plants as a part of her program and many reported they had had great success with delicious tomatoes and many of the vines were still producing.

The next meeting will be Thursday, December 10, at 2 p.m. at the North Wilkes Library.

Mrs. Kennedy and Genevieve Thurmond served delicious refreshments during a time of fellowship.

Members present were Celeste Adams, Linda Burns, Carol Daniel, Mabel Johnson, Sally Kennedy, Edna Lamar, Sarah Pelot, Genevieve Thurmond and Mary Webster.
