Robert "Skeet" Willingham was guest speaker at the meeting of the Kettle Creek Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Monday, November 16, at the Woman's Club in Washington.

Following the luncheon, Betty Slaton introduced Mr. Willingham to members and guests. He spoke about the research involved in the writing of his newest book, Deadly Trust - the Mysterious Disappearance of the Nelms Sisters. He mentioned the many years he had studied census records, court records, maps, newspapers and others sources as he discovered the personalities of the parties involved in the true crime investigated in the book. Members and guests were enthralled by his story.

Miss Slaton announced that a gift had been made to Mary Willis Library in honor of Mr. Willingham in appreciation of his presentation.

Anneice Butler presided. Ginny Broome gave the opening ritual and led the flag ceremony. Anna Gunter led the chapter in singing The National Anthem. Guests were introduced and welcomed. Mrs. Broome offered the blessing for the meal.

Following the luncheon and program, Mrs. Butler led the business meeting at which time reports were given. She read the President General's message concerning Veterans Day, the Josiah Wedgewood Exhibit at the DAR Museum in Washington, D.C., and the upcoming Thanksgiving celebration. Milly Arnold continued with the National Defense message.

Photos of the October field trip to Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, S.C., were shared among the members.

It was announced that member, Jennifer Lance Atkinson, was named Wilkes County Teacher of the Year. Also, sympathy was expressed to Debra Denard in the loss of her mother.

Miss Slaton announced that she attended the SAR Emory Lecture Series in October.

Nina Albea announced she had sent 139 Campell's Soup labels to Tamassee School in October as a part of an ongoing project of the chapter.

An announcement of the DAR Good Citizen Award winners was made by Joanne Pollock.

Miss Slaton announced that Pat Thomas was a transferring member to the chapter. Other new members are Dicye (Bootsie) Lucas Averette, Mildred Lucas Hackney and Linda Lucas Hopkins.

Plans are being made for memorial services for Sandy Richards, Frances Prater, Dr. Sophia Bamford and Margaret Pennington.

Mrs. Butler reminded everyone of the annual Candlelight Tour of Meadow Garden in Augusta December 3-5 and that volunteers are needed to make cookies and lead tours.

It was also noted that Austin Dabney's grave will be marked in Zebulon and the December 5 anniversary of Vann's Creek Battle will be celebrated. Mrs. Butler and Miss Slaton plan to attend.

Jane Burton, in the absence of Phyllis Scarborough, announced that a basket was placed near the entrance to collect money for disabled and aged veterans.

Rita Harwood noted the procedure for making donations to the Veterans Clinic in Athens is through Disabled American Veterans, Harold L. Huff Chapter #92, P. O. Box 7878, Athens, GA, 30606 - Commander Steve Warner @706-340-6748. Nearly half of the veterans seen at this clinic are unemployed and really need help.

Mrs. Butler thanked the hostesses, Joanne Pollock, Suzette Kopecky, Betty Slaton, Lillie Crowe and Debra Denard, for the lovely fall leaves and fruit decorations.
