Event successful; future looks bright

TO THE EDITOR:

It is with heartfelt joy and gratitude that I write this letter of thanks to you, the editor, and the staff of The News-Reporter; and the many citizens of Wilkes County and the surrounding areas.

Let me begin at the beginning. Along with Ashley Barnett, I was asked to help with the details of the “Tying Up Cancer for Calli” benefit concert by Ty Herndon for Calli Nickels. I agreed simply because I love the Nickels family and Calli is one of “my girls.”

With much ease we set about planning the event and were touched with the willingness of everyone in the community to pitch in and help. Mayor Richard Gammon and the Town of Tignall graciously donated the use of the community gym. Washington First Baptist Church members jumped on the band wagon and made baked goods for the concessions stand.

Saul Smith of the Newtown Rhythm Band donated his time and equipment for Mr. Herndon’s use during the concert. At the last minute, Freddy Brown came to the rescue and provided us with his keyboard. Kyle Bearse, Mandy Jackson, Kay Fincher, Lavonda Tanner, and Paula Fitzgerald and the girls at The Sandwich Shop sold tickets.

Allison Rogers, Shela Lawson and Kay Tyler made donations and worked the concessions stand. Numerous law officers arrived to show their support and provide an official presence. Ann and Bud Harrison worked the door in the chilly lobby. Kyle Bearse recruited chairs to add to those from the North Wilkes Steering Committee and the Tignall Baptist Church. The Tignall Baptist Youth Group moved chairs and cleaned the gym.

The News-Reporter printed beautiful posters and tickets for the event. Nobie and Hugh Keener donated the use of their beautiful historic home for the “Meet and Greet” prior to the concert. Bonnie Hadden, Calli’s volunteer from the “Make a Wish Foundation,” who coordinated the event for us. Ty Herndon generously donated his evening and his talents to brighten a young girl’s life and lighten the load of her illness. Generous friends of this family purchased tickets and came and supported this wonderful cause.

Once again the benefits of living in a small town overwhelm my heart. What a blessing to be surrounded by so many people so willing to share their time, talent and love.

To all of you who contributed to this event in any way -- God bless you! Over $3700 was raised and given to the Nickels family to be used towards their expenses.

Calli received great news at her last check-up so the future is looking brighter for this amazing young lady.

Thanks again for all your love, prayer, and support -- and Merry Christmas.
CAROL McTIER
and ASHLEY BARNETT
