Life begins at the animal shelter

TO THE EDITOR:

I’m writing this letter today because I think there is something everyone needs to know about the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter.

For unwanted dogs and cats, it’s not an ending, it’s a beginning, a new start in life. At the animal shelter they have a chance to find a new home where they can be loved and cared for. This is what our shelter was founded to do, not just a place to store excess animals.

The staff and volunteers work hard to place all the animals in good homes not just locally but nationally as well. That’s right. Our little shelter is known all over America. Didn’t know that, did you.

Next time you have a cat, dog, puppies, or kittens, don’t throw them out in the woods. Bring them to the shelter. They can’t survive out there on their own. Believe it or not, a dog that’s been domesticated can’t fend for itself in the wild.

I’m ashamed to say that I’ve been guilty of this myself in the past, but since a friend of mine got me to volunteer I’ve come to realize our shelter’s worth.

So please support our shelter and remember that life begins here. It doesn’t end here.
