First Baptist choir to present musical worship Dec. 20
The Senior Choir of the Washington First Baptist Church will present a worship service in music on Sunday evening, December 20, at 7 p.m.
This tradition goes back for many years and embodies various styles of presentation. The cantata, titled I Hear the Prophet Callin,’ is different in that it will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble consisting of violin, viola, cello, harp, doublebass, flute, percussion, piano, and organ.
“The style of the cantata is folklike and its informality is indicated by the title,” says Patricia B. Burton, First Baptist Music Director.
The cantata was composed using folk styles to tell the story of the coming of Christ. As the music is presented, the flavor of Appalachian, Irish, Latin, Cajun, and early American rhythms and tunes will be recognized.
Members of the instrumental ensemble are Timothy Kelley, violin; Genevieve Coe, cello, harp, and flute; Ian Coe, viola; Stan Coe, doublebass; Emilie Waters and Abby Foster, percussion; Paulette George, piano; and Jane Newsome, organ.
The program will be conducted by Patricia B. Burton, music director; and narrated by Rev. Klay Aspinwall. Soloists will include Tom Wells, Tommy Wells, Teresa Bishop, Emilie Waters, Kay Nelms, Ann Tiller, Paige Eason, and Shirley Gunter.
The public is invited to attend this special service of worship. A nursery is provided for small children.
