Iris Garden Club celebrates holiday at Christmas brunch
Holly Court Inn on South Alexander Avenue was the setting for the Iris Garden Club Annual Christmas Brunch Tuesday, December 8.
Franny Robinson, president, presided and welcomed everyone including new member, Cathy Armour. She also expressed joy in another new member, Linda Anthony, who was unable to attend due to illness.
A short business meeting was held. Mrs. Robinson noted that everyone had received a paper outlining the information for the upcoming Members’ Flower Show to be held in January. Each member was reminded to bring a plant from home in one of the designated categories to be part of an educational and fun program.
Horticulture Committee chairman Karen Stubbs, gave each member a delightful handout entitled “All I Need to Know About Life I Learned From Trees”.
Polly Fievet, Fort Washington Park Committee chairman, reported the committee had planted a number of iris bulbs and violas in the Park. They also placed ribbons on the trees that will later be identified and marked. Another meeting will follow and the group will plant 150 daffodil bulbs in the Park.
Christmas Stocking Committee chairman Patsy Winn announced that 40 felt Christmas stockings had been made by members of the committee and are being mailed along with a check for $40 to the State Hospital for Christmas.
Oleta McAvoy, Fig Leaf Project chairman, reported that she will be taking 50 items of clothing such as robes, gowns, underwear, handkerchiefs, men’s slip-on shoes, shirts, socks, etc., to the State Hospital for Christmas.
As club chairman of Christmas at Callaway, Gail Boyd announced that her committee would decorate The Grey House for the holidays and Christmas Tour.
In other committee reports Dot Harris, Nursing Home Garden chairman, asked members to donate some of their daffodil bulbs for planting at the Heritage Healthcare of Wilkes. She noted that it would be a great addition and the club might think about honoring the senior members by planting these bulbs. The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., is asking each club to participate in the “Golden Days” project which is the planting of yellow bulbs as an emphasis on remembering senior members. The club will consider this project in both the plantings at Heritage and Fort Washington Park.
Mrs. Harris noted that there is still a need for bell ringers for the Salvation Army.
It was announced that the Native Plant Symposium is Wednesday, January 20, at the Garden Club of Georgia Terrace Room in Athens. Mrs. Robinson passed out registration forms to all those interested.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12, at Wesley Hall of First United Methodist Church. The program will a members’ flower show, “A Winter Garden (Part II). Members were reminded to bring their plant by 10 a.m. Louise Grimaud will be the judge.
Debbie Bennett offered the blessing before the delightful brunch.
