Charlie T. Mariney
Funeral services for Charlie T. Mariney, 94, were held Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at McLendon Memorial Chapel in Washington with Minister James A. Thomas officiating. Interment was in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga.
Mr. Mariney was born in Lincolnton and was the son of the late Jessie Lee and John Mariney. He lived in Lincoln and Wilkes County all of his life. He was the widower of Martha Marshall Mariney. He was an avid baseball fan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 13, 1942, and was assigned to the 383rd Aviation Squadron, Fort Benning. He served in the Pacific war zone and participated in the New Guinea and Southern Philippines Liberation Campaign. He received many decorations and citations during World War II, including the World War II Victory Medal, American Services Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Joann Mariney Parker; two sons, Charlie Mariney Jr. and his wife Bernice, and Leon Mariney; two granddaughters, Donna Mythil and her husband Jacques, and Lauren Mariney; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Tammer Mariney and Vernease Alford.
McLendon Memorial Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
