Wilkes County STAR Student Josh Fair and his chosen teacher Jennifer Atkinson are recognized by Ashley Barnett and Jane Bundy of the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce and W-WCHS Assistant Principal Mark Ward. Joshua Fair, a senior at Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School, has been chosen this year’s STAR Student. He has chosen science teacher Jennifer Atkinson as his STAR teacher, and the two will be honored at a Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce breakfast Tuesday, February 16, at 8 a.m. at The Fitzpatrick Hotel.

Fair won the honor by having both the highest SAT score in the school and having a top-10 grade point average. He plans to attend North Georgia College in Dahlonega on an Army National Guard military scholarship, with a goal of becoming an officer in the Army Chemical Corps.

Fair is the son of Bill and Tanya Fair of Washington. The family moved to Wilkes County just three years ago from Ohio.

Reservations for the February 16 STAR Breakfast should be made by e-mail at tourism@washingtonwilkes. org (with STAR Breakfast in the subject line.) Reservations may also be made by leaving a message at the Chamber, 706-678-2013.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program was created to focus public attention on Georgia’s outstanding students and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. During the past 48 years, the STAR Program has honored more than 20,000 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR teachers to share in this recognition.

Later, Fair and other system STAR students will go on to compete for regional honors in the STAR Regions. Region winners and their STAR teachers are invited to Atlanta to compete for the state STAR awards.
