Honor roll students have banquet; spelling bee winners compete today

Students who made the honor roll for achieving As or Bs in all their classes both nine-week terms last semester were recognized at a banquet in the W-WMS/W-WCHS cafeteria Thursday, January 28. The students and two family members were treated to a scrumptious meal served by the teachers. According to Bill Pendrey, W-WMS principal, almost 30 percent of the student body had made the honor roll last semester. Special congratulations goes out to the students who achieved all As both terms: Ariel Brown, Payton Burris, Kasey Gowen, Logan Griffin, Meredith Gunter, Ashlyn Holley, Brannon James, Tyler Jones, Divesia Lee, D. J. Martin, Amy McAvoy, Paden McTier, Jacob Morgan, Hunter Newsome, Madison Powell, Marisa Sifre, Hope Ward, and Ethan Yearwood.

W-WMS held grade-level spelling bees on January 28 and 29. In the sixth grade, Huzaifah Aamir won first place and Ivette Gijon won second place; in the seventh grade, first place was Dorian Favors and second place was Joanna Gaskin; and in the eighth grade, Wishah Aamir placed first and Johnathan Flint placed second. These students will participate in the Wilkes County Schools system-wide spelling bee at 9 a.m. Thursday, February 4, in the W-WCHS/W-WMS media center.

In the classroom, students in Ansley Johnson’s sixth grade earth science classes recently constructed a booklet about the solar system. They were given time in class and in the media center to complete their booklets. Their booklets included an accurate colored diagram of the entire solar system, and a page about each planet that included information such as the planet’s size, distance from the sun, orbit and rotation.

The Wilkes County 4-H dairy show team competed in Elbert County January 23. Four W-WMS students placed in their weight class: Megan Thackston, third; Miranda Crook, fifth; Marlyse Sifre, sixth; and Shannon Thackston, eighth.

The Junior Beta Club is raising money through its annual “candy gram” sales. Students and teachers can send a lollipop with a personalized message to someone for 50 cents. Orders will be taken February 2-11 during lunch and the candy grams will be delivered on Friday, February 12.

The student council will sponsor a student dance after school on Thursday, February 11, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Admission is $3.00. Pizza will be sold for $1.00 per slice and soft drinks for $.50 each. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Relay for Life, which is a community-wide fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.
