Frances Wheelis WOM members gather at Nelms home February 1
The Frances Wheelis Women on Mission met Monday evening, February 1, in the home of Pug and Kay Nelms on Bryans Drive
Melanie Wells, facilitator, presided. She welcomed visitors, Carol Souther and Tara Townsend.
After everyone recited the WMU Watchword, Mrs. Wells offered a devotional from Daily Guideposts emphasizing the scripture, Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinketh, so is he.” In her comments she noted that we should all choose to be happy.
During the business meeting Rosemary Hopkins, secretary, and Gail Hunter, treasurer, gave their reports. The upcoming Annie Armstrong Luncheon on March 20 was discussed and members voted to make a contribution to the luncheon. Members also volunteered to decorate several tables.
WMU Council announcements included in addition to the Annie Armstrong Luncheon, the H.E.A.R.T. Ministry shower, Children’s Ministry Day on February 20, and the free yard sale at the Georgia Baptist Association Office on April 17.
Mrs. Nelms gave the mission action report and members voted to continue their support to Shaped by God in Canada and Rick’s Institute in Liberia. The group also voted to make a contribution to the Haiti Relief Fund through the Georgia Baptist Association.
Rosemary Hopkins led the discussion of plans for the annual Valentine party at Heritage Healthcare of Wilkes. Susan Pope offered to follow up on the plans and many offered to provide refreshments.
Priscilla Moore, mission study chairman, gave a most informative and interesting program on Haiti. Her husband, Ray, has traveled to Haiti through Partners in Health for several years. She gave a bit of the history of the school and health facility there that has grown from a two-room clinic to a 104-bed, two operating room facility. She told of the efforts of this ministry in Cange and how they have dealt with the influx of people from the earthquake-ravaged area of Port-u- Prince. Partners in Health has also traveled to Port-u-Prince to serve there. Jackie Gillispie closed the program with prayer for this ministry and the Haitian people.
Teresa Bishop, mission support chairman, continued the meeting with the missionary prayer calendar and focus on West Africa. After missionaries with birthdays on February 1 were given and those with special needs in the community named, she closed in prayer.
Mrs. Nelms served delicious strawberry trifle, cheese straws and nuts with assorted hot and cold beverages from a table beautifully decorated in a Valentine theme.
Present were Rosemary Hopkins, Julia Palmer, Nancy Madden, Carol Souther, Teresa Bishop, Tara Townsend, Ann Tiller, Jackie Gillispie, Priscilla Moore, Melanie Wells, Eloise Wood, Cheryl Bentley, Louise McClearen, Kay Nelms, Elizabeth Pope, Cheryl Edwards, Susan Pope and Bobbie Johnson.
