Wilkes man shot as possible drug deal turns into robbery

An alleged drug deal gone bad resulted in a shooting on Meredith Circle in Washington Monday night.

Joe Vest, of Wilkes County, was shot twice in the back, Washington Police say, as he was attempting to sell packets of marijuana in the housing complex at about 8 p.m. Monday. “It looks like he was down there with another individual selling marijuana,” said Investigator J.D. Nelson, “and two individuals pulled a gun on him and robbed him.”

Apparently, Vest fled from the robbers and was shot by one of the robbers in the back. He was found at the scene with gunshot wounds, treated by Wilkes EMS and rescue personnel and transported to Wills Memorial’s helipad for air transport to the Medical College of Georgia trauma center.

Officers interviewed witnesses to the shooting and investigators quickly developed suspects in the shooting, Nelson said late Monday night. At press time for this issue, no arrests had yet been announced.
