History professor to speak at Civil War Round Table Mon.
Dr. Carol Crowe Carraco, Professor of history at Western Kentucky University, will present “Courageous Capitulating Confederates: Georgia, 1865” to the Washington Civil War Round Table on Monday evening, February 22, at 6 p.m. at the Jockey Club restaurant on The Square in Washington.
Claibourne Darden, Round Table president, says Dr. Carraco’s presentation is the story of the escape of President Jefferson Davis and what remained of his Confederate Cabinet as they made their way from South Carolina through northern Georgia into the city of Washington. “Many of their family members, their friends, and their neighbors had already been killed in the war; their armies had been defeated. Their way of life had gone; their magnificent homes were gone; their fortunes were gone. Their government had collapsed and law and order had broken down. These leaders of our nation, the Confederate States of America, were being pursued by every available member of the Union Army and Union Navy. Yet, they retained their dignity, their leadership, their ability – all at amazing levels,” he said. “Who were the men of such rare ability and character that were in Washington, Georgia in May of 1865?”
Darden went on. “They were here, here in Washington. They had the Confederate Treasury with them and several thousand members of the Confederate Army and Navy to guard it. What was left of the Confederate Treasury was dispersed in Washington. One of the Confederate Treasury chests is still in Washington at the Mary Willis Library. Their journey is a most incredible and fascinating story that you will not wasn’t to miss!”
Dr. Carraco is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Georgia where she also received her Ph.D. in history. She is currently on the faculty of Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she has been named as a Distinguished University Professor.
