Bessie Mae Favors Wimberly
Funeral services for A1C Bessie Mae Favors Wimberly, 57, were held Saturday, February 6, 2010, at Mark’s Tabernacle Baptist Church with Rev. Lance A. Pitts officiating. Interment was in the City West Cemetery, Washington. She died Wednesday, February 3, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Augusta.
Mrs. Wimberly was a native of Wilkes County and the daughter of Pearl T. Favors and the late Bennie Favors. She was a member of Mark’s Tabernacle Baptist Church. Following graduation from high school she served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1975 when she was honorably discharged. During her tour of duty she earned many honors including the rank of A1C, general clerk, and a Certified Security Police WAF at Norten Air Force Base in California. While in the military she married Jimmy Wimberly. She worked for MasterCard Collections, and for SunLife Insurance as a data entry clerk. While working at SunLife, she designed NELKO, a computer software for a company in Japan. This accomplishment enabled her to become the first black supervisor with SunLife, until the company relocated. She later worked with Bio-Lab as a computer programmer analyst until her health failed.
Survivors include her mother, Pearl T. Favors of Washington; and three sisters, Jeraline Bell, Helen Binns, both of Washington, and Doreatha Wyms of Atlanta.
Members of the Washington- Wilkes Comprehensive High School Class of 1970 served as pallbearers.
Davenport-McLendon Mortuary Inc., of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
