The Washington Woman’s Club continued a long-standing tradition as it hosted the annual John Duggan Memorial Scholarship Dinner Monday evening, February 8, at the clubhouse.

The scholarship is awarded to a deserving graduating high school senior. Proceeds from the dinner event fund this scholarship begun in memory of John Duggan, son of Mary Johnson Duggan and the late Dr. Dan Duggan, who died after a valiant battle with cancer at the age of 19.

Club president, Vivian Walker, welcomed everyone and Alice Lindsey, chaplain, offered the blessing.

Following the delicious dinner, Paulette George, pianist, accompanied guest vocalists, Angela Dering of Greensboro and Neal Dolvin of Union Point, who entertained with numerous selections that included several familiar love songs. Mrs. George also provided the music for dining.

Buddy Lindsey and Tom Duggan were speakers for the evening. Mr. Lindsey spoke of memories of John during his school years and his Punt, Pass and Kick competitions. Tom Duggan spoke of the memories he had of his older brother.

John’s mother, Mary, was recognized. Her guests included her family, Dan and Patti Duggan and Daniel of Augusta, Tom and Gail Duggan, Katie and Thomas, of Washington; also, Boots and Shirley Gunter and Buzzy and Jo Randall.

Hostesses for the evening, Dean Mansfield, Paulette George and Bettye Armour, decorated the clubhouse in a Valentine motif. A red and white Valentine wreath adorned the front door. Inside, mantels featured greenery and decorative Valentine boxes. Red cloths covered the tables beautifully decorated with red and white camellias.

Eighty-five members and guests participated in the evening event.
