Police secretary pleads guilty, sentenced to three years in jail
The Washington police department’s former secretary will spend three years in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of theft by conversion of public property in Wilkes Superior Court during the court’s February session.
Tammy Land was sentenced by Judge Harold A. Hinesley to 12 years, with three years in confinement and the balance on probation. She was ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $94,388.85 plus a fine of $1,000 and monthly probation fees.
Land was arrested in May 2009 after a large amount of money was found to be missing during a routine audit by an outside municipal auditor. The auditor found discrepancies in money paid for municipal traffic fines at the police station and payments given to the city.
Another high-profile case, the dog-fighting cases against Tavares Ramsey and Wanda Ramsey, were continued until a later date due to a scheduling conflict with one of the defendants’ attorneys. The case of co-defendant Avery Mathis was also continued.
In other cases, Christopher Grant pleaded guilty to three charges: felony aggravated assault, obstruction of an officer, and discharging a gun near a public highway. On the assault charge, Judge Hinesley sentenced Grant to 8 years, with four years in confinement. Grant was sentenced to 12 months confinement each on the two other charges, with sentences to be concurrent. He was also fined $1,000 and ordered to get his GED.
Dontidius Wylie pleaded guilty to felony possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and to possession of marijuana. On the cocaine charge, he was sentenced to eight years with two years in confinement plus $1,000 fine and the drug package. On the marijuana charge, he was sentenced to 12 months confinement to be served concurrently.
Nicholas Antwan Norman pleaded guilty to felony possession of cocaine and was sentenced to six years with two years in confinement and the balance on probation, with credit for time served, plus fines. He also pleaded to misdemeanor possession of marijuana and was sentenced to 12 months probation to be served concurrently after release from confinement.
Patrick Tamaris Willis pleaded guilty to one count of felony possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and was sentenced to six years with two years in confinement and the balance on probation with credit for time served, plus a $1,500 fine. He also pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of an officer and was sentenced to five months confinement with credit for time served, to be served concurrently.
Robert Douglas Johnson pleaded guilty to felony possession of methamphetamine; driving under the influence (less safe, drugs) and driving on a suspended license. He was sentenced to six years with 10 days in confinement with credit for time served on the drug charge, and 12 months with 48 hours confinement on each of the two other charges, all to be served concurrently. Judge Hinesley also ordered Johnson to do 30 days community service and for his photo to be published as a DUI.
Jimmy Evans pleaded guilty to negotiating a fictitious check and was sentenced to five years probation, a $1,500 fine, and 50 hours community service.
Waddy Leon Luke pleaded guilty to one count of theft by receiving stolen property and was sentenced to 12 months confinement.
Bernard S. Goldman pleaded guilty to one count of battery and was sentenced to 12 months probation plus $1,000 fine. He was ordered to have no contact with his victim, not to consume alcohol, and to complete alcohol treatment and counseling.
Detra Marie Moore pleaded guilty to two counts of felony burglary and was sentenced to five years probation on each, to be served concurrently. She was also ordered to pay fines, do community service, and complete a drug and alcohol treatment program. She also pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal trespass and was sentenced to 12 months probation.
Kenneth Reid Jr. pleaded guilty to felony burglary and was sentenced to eight years with 12 months in confinement, was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $500 restitution and to stay away from the victim.
Benjamin Anderson pleaded guilty to felony burglary and was sentenced to 10 years with 12 months confinement and the balance on probation. He was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines and pay restitution.
Edward Scott pleaded guilty to one count of felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance; and one count of felony possession of methamphetamine. On each count, he was sentenced to six years, with 10 days confinement with credit for time served and the balance on probation, to be served concurrently. He was fined $1,000 on each count and ordered to take the drug package.
Charrod Butler pleaded guilty to felony entering an automobile. He was sentenced to five years in confinement.
Ferdinand C. Monfort pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence and to one count of violating the habitual violator law. On the habitual violator count, he was sentenced to 12 months with 60 days in confinement. On the DUI count, Monfort was sentenced to 12 months probation to be served consecutively, plus fines.
Tangie Chafin pleaded guilty to one count of felony possession of cocaine; one count of driving under the influence; one count of violating the open container law; and one count of failure to yield at a stop sign. She was sentenced to four years probation, $1000 fine and the drug package on the possession charge, and 12 months probation on each of the three other charges, to be served concurrently, plus fines. She was also ordered to serve 40 hours community service and attend driving school.
Lisa Bell pleaded guilty to two counts of felony forgery in the first degree and sentenced to two years probation on each to be served concurrently, and to pay restitution and fines.
Kimberly Simpson pleaded guilty to one count of felony deposit account fraud. She was sentenced to two years probation, and to pay restitution and fines.
