Wilkes County students to compete in junior steer, heifer show Saturday

Four Wilkes County students will be participating Saturday in the 56th Annual Washington Area Junior Steer and Heifer Show, along with some 32 students from Lincoln, Oglethorpe, Elbert, and Madison counties, at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center in Washington.

The Wilkes County students are Greg Callaway, Brett Lunceford, Cody Boatwright, and Gabe Strother.

Check-in time for all steers and heifers entering this year’s show is Friday from 1-4 p.m., with the annual Steer and Heifer Show banquet to be held at the ag center that night beginning at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the banquet are $6 for students and $12 for adults, with showmen admitted free.

Judge for the event will be Fred Rayfield of Adel, Georgia.

The livestock show will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and includes events such as the heifer show; twelfth grade showmanship (steer and heifer); tenth and eleventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); eighth and ninth grade showmanship (steer and heifer); fourth through seventh grade showmanship (steer and heifer); the steer show; County Group of Five; and Breeder’s Special.

Rev. Chris Townsend, Minister of Students at Washington First Baptist Church, will serve as the chaplain for the event.
