William A. Pope guest of honor at 92nd birthday party, dinner

William A. Pope William A. Pope William A. Pope of Atlanta and Washington was honored on the occasion of his 92nd birthday at a family dinner Saturday evening, February 6, at the Fitzpatrick Hotel Ballroom in Washington.

Family members gathered in the ballroom which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Lighted pillar candles and eucalyptus adorned the mantels. Tables, overlaid in white floor-length cloths, featured designs of tall crystal candlesticks with scattered camellia blossoms, decorative crystal holders with floating camellias and candles and scattered petals around settings of camellias.

After a time of greeting and becoming reacquainted with family not seen for some time and new family additions, Mr. Pope’s sisterin law, Penny Tison Coppedge of Charleston, S.C., offered the blessing.

Everyone enjoyed a bountiful and delicious Southern buffet.

After dinner, many stood with tributes and toasts to the guest of honor. Mr. Pope thanked the family for the birthday celebration and expressed his love to all his family.

Following a hearty rendition of “Happy Birthday,” he was also treated to a special offering of “Happy Birthday” by his great-niece, Ginna Wallace of Charleston.

Everyone was then served birthday cake. The cake, made by Joyce Parton and decorated by Karen Saggus, featured a picture of the family home, Pembroke, on West Robert Toombs Avenue complete with the side portico and the familiar scene with the jeep parked inside.

Celebrating with the guest of honor were his wife, Ginna Tison Pope; children and families, Ridley C. Pope and husband, Dr. John M. Bemis of Houston, Tex., and chil- dren, Robert and Anna DiBenedetto of Greenwood, S.C.; Tom and Jill Clarke and children, Emily, Tom and Robert; and Jason and Elizabeth Pope Smithgall of Atlanta. Also attending were John and Penny Coppedge of Charleston and family, Clarke and Catherine Wallace, Virginia (Ginna), South and Penny, also of Charleston, and Sophie and Hajo Smulders, Hajo and Everett; Dudley and Kay Ottley; Hunter and Laura Tison and family, Sebastian and Laura Meis, all of Atlanta, Steven and Fraser Kent of Athens and Michael and Katie Baddour of Memphis, Tenn; Woody Tison and son, Southwood, of Atlanta; niece and nephews from Washington and their families, Charlotte Pope Simmons and children, Ruth Taylor Simmons Ollerich of Atlanta and Robert and Tara Simmons, Ava and Austin; Edward and Susan Pope and family, Edward Pope III and Eliza; and Pembroke and Sandra Pope, of Washington, and children, Pembroke and Chrissie Pope of Canton; and Joy Ray, also of Washington.
