Assaults, thefts top February reports of Wilkes Co. arrests

Assault and property crimes, along with drunk driving arrests, led the February roundup of arrests by city, county, and state law enforcement officers in Wilkes County.

Johnny Scott, 40, of Rayle, was arrested January 29 by Wilkes deputies and charged with using “fighting words,” obscene and vulgar language; and with obstruction of an officer. He was released on $3,500 bond. On February 9, Scott was arrested for felony possession of firearms by a convicted felon and for felony theft by receiving stolen property. He was denied bond.

George Tutt, 49, of Washington, was arrested February 15 by Washington police and charged with aggravated assault and with possession of arms by a convicted felon. He was released on $15,000 bond.

Hope R. Martin, 24, of Tignall, was arrested February 11 by Wilkes deputies and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and with failing to keep drugs in their original container. She was released on $11,700 bond.

Celeste Baker, 23, of Milledgeville, was arrested January 31 by Washington police and charged with felony aggravated assault. She was released on $10,000 bond.

Michael Wylie Jr., 21, of Washington, was arrested January 26 by Wilkes deputies and charged with entering an auto with intent of felony, and with criminal trespass. He was bound over to Superior Court on both charges.

Bernard John Brown, 18, of Rayle, was arrested February 18 by Wilkes deputies and charged with burglary. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Demontez D. Johnson, 17, of Thomson, was arrested February 5 by Washington police and charged with sale of alcohol to a minor; obstruction of an officer; fleeing or attempting to elude an officer; driving without a license; reckless driving; having an open container in the vehicle; failure to stop for a stop sign; and failure to drive within a single lane. He was released on $4,698 bond.

William Cofer, 49, of Washington, was arrested January 31 by Wilkes deputies and charged with theft by taking. He was released on $3,500 bond.

Clifford Roger Johnson, 67, of Washington, was arrested February 7 by Washington police and charged with simple battery (family violence). He was released on $3,500 bond.

Benjamin Conal Fuller, 37, of Thomson, was arrested February 15 by Wilkes deputies and charged with three counts of deposit account fraud. He was released on $1,500 bond.

Lazarto Smith, 28, of Washington, was arrested February 12 by Wilkes deputies and charged with contempt of court (child support.) He was held on a probation violation.

Robert Harling, 18, of Washington, was arrested February 4 by Washington police and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana (less than 1 oz.) He was released on $1,626 bond.

John D. Dye, 30, of Wilkes County, was arrested February 2 by Wilkes deputies on a child support order to incarcerate. He was released on payment of arrears.

Merlin Charles Hedge, 33, of Augusta, was arrested January 26 by a Georgia State Patrol trooper and charged with speeding (26-30 miles over) and with driving without a license. He was released on $2,000 bond.

John Machado, 37, of Athens, was arrested January 31 by Washington police and charged with driving without a license. He was released on $1,426 bond.

Shirley A. Murray, 41, of Washington, was arrested February 10 by Washington police and charged with driving while tag is suspended, and driving without a license. She was held for Thomson Police.

Perry Lee Davis Jr. 21, of Washington, was arrested February 11 by a Georgia State Patrol trooper and charged with driving while license is withdrawn. He was released on $1,500 bond.

Patrick Davis, 31, of Lincolnton, was arrested February 9 by a Georgia State Patrol trooper and charged with driving while license is withdrawn. He was released on $1,426 bond.

Helen C. Garrard, 42, of Augusta, was arrested February 11 by Wilkes deputies on a Superior Court bench warrant for false report of a crime. She was released on $1,500 bond.

Charles Acree, 28, of Wilkes County, was arrested January 28 by Washington police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $283 bond.

Gabriel Dontay Leverette, 23, of Lincolnton, was arrested February 20 by Washington police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $566 bond.

Willie Sims, 52, of Washington, was arrested February 24 by Washington police and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on $566 bond.

There were 10 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI):

Terrence Holloway, 23, of Lincolnton, was arrested February 20 by Washington police and charged with DUI and with leaving the scene of an accident (hit and run). He was released on $2,494 bond.

Lance Evans, 31, of Washington, was arrested February 18 by a Georgia State trooper and charged with DUI, speeding 26-30 miles over, and with driving while license is withdrawn. He was released on $6,000 bond.

Larry M. McAvoy, 63, of Wilkes County, was arrested January 20 by Wilkes deputies and charged with being a habitual violator and held on a probation violation.

Jetta Chapman, 24, of Wilkes County, was arrested January 28 by Washington police and charged with DUI; giving false information or a false name; speeding (26-30 miles over); and driving without a license. She was held on $3,500 bond.

Corey Danner, 34, of Washington, was arrested January 30 by Washington police and charged with DUI and with driving too fast for conditions. He was released on $1,822 bond.

Michael Carroll, 48, of Washington, was arrested January 30 by Washington police and charged with DUI. He was released on $1,628 bond.

John William Creel, 52, of Wilkes County, was arrested February 16 by a Georgia State trooper and charged with DUI and with failure to drive within a single lane. He was released on $1,822 bond.

Sherman Harper, 24, of Elberton, was arrested February 16 by a Georgia State trooper and charged with DUI and with failure to drive within a single lane. He was released on $2,000 bond.

Nicole Shantal Murray, 24, of Washington, was arrested February 10 by Washington police and charged with DUI. She was released on $1,628 bond.

Christopher L. McAvoy, 37, of Wilkes County, was arrested February 15 by a Georgia State trooper and charged with DUI. He was released on $1,394 bond.
