Two Washington city councilmen and others assisted seventh and eighth grade students in the Taliaferro County School who participated in a career day to satisfy a Georgia Performance Standard in technical writing on Friday, February 26, 2010. The Georgia State Board of Education prescribes standards that students must master during the course of a school year before taking the CRCT in April.

The students’ teacher, Arstasia Evans, designed a performance task which required students to identify a field that in which they would like to work. The students had to research the job to gather information on the job requirements, education needed, and salary to be expected. The students also had to complete a cover letter, resume, and job application.

To increase the rigor of the assignment and to make it a real-life application, students had to demonstrate what they had learned by participating in an interview with members of the Wilkes and Taliaferro communities. Nathaniel Cullars and Marion Tutt, Jr. served as interviewers for this project. These two city councilmen, who serve in Washington, shared their experiences with students and gave them valuable advice that the students can use in their life beyond school.

One student, Ina Silvey, stated in her thank you letter that “the experience has greatly increased my knowledge in obtaining a job in the future.”

Also helping with the interviews were Dorothy Kendrick, a retired healthcare clerk; Ginny Power, graduation coach; Rev. Harvey Peek, pastor of Rose Hill Baptist Church in Elberton; Randee Barry, health occupations instructor; Daerzio Harris, middle grades science and social studies teacher; and Sergeant Ricky Tarver, deputy sheriff in Crawfordville.
