Entire system gets accreditation; Ryan Jones wins oratorical contest
The Wilkes County School District was awarded District Accreditation as a quality school system and W-WMS is proud of our part of that accomplishment! Members of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) visited our school on February 23. They observed our classrooms and interviewed teachers, administrators, and students. The students who were interviewed were Wishah Aamir, Christian Keiser, Chris Jackson, Chandler Pharr, Meridith Gunter, Divesia Lee, Ashlyn Holley, and Sydney Freeman.
Congratulations to the winners of the Optimist Club’s oratorical contest held February 25. In third place and receiving a $50 savings bond, was Dorian Favors. Ashlyn Holley came in second place and received a $100 savings bond. Ryan Jones came in first place and received a $200 savings bond. Ryan will compete in the zone contest in Augusta on March 13.
Black History Month, in February, inspired Tabatha Lott to give her seventh-grade language arts students a project based on the famous African- American person of their choice. She assigned her students a “bio-poem,” a 10-line poem describing an individual. Students chose which person they wanted to write about, conducted research on that person, and wrote a bio-poem about them.
Ninety students participated in the Georgia Math League contest on February 23. Math teachers had selected 30 students from each grade to take the test. The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. League specialties include math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the fourth grade through high school. Over a million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest questions are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level.
Last week, eighth graders registered for their elective courses for next year. The students got to meet their new homeroom teachers. The students will have the same homeroom teacher each year, where they will have 15 minutes of advisement each day.
Baseball season opened with a tournament in Thomson, February 20. We faced GMC and won, 3-1. We then played a second game against Wrens losing 2-1. There was an outstanding double play with Justin Meyers catching a grounder and throwing it to Alan Hardy at second base. Alan then threw it to Jack Martin at first who tagged the opponent out. On February 23, we travelled to Louisville, but were unsuccessful, losing 13-4. The Tigers hosted Wrens on February 25 and suffered another defeat, 11-0.
