Now that the Winter Olympics is over I wonder what will be running across the top of my computer. For the last few weeks I have seen ice skaters and skiers. I understand this is the first year that recycled materials have been added to the medals. The Olympics is a search for excellence in sports, but sports do not build character -- they reveal character. I would be very embarrassed if my son or daughter showed poor sportsmanship in a ball game or after the game. I heard recently of a tennis player being angry because he didn’t win so he refused to shake the hand of his opponent. That showed lack of character. Speaking of the Olympics, my grandchildren could participate in the winter Olympics. They always want to stay outside in this cold weather to play. I get cold just watching these games from inside. ƒMary Jacobs of Monticello has been spending several days with Myrline Thornton. Frances Vinson visited Myrline Saturday. Her daughter, Debbie Haines of Elberton, brought her for the visit. It is so good to hear of Frances being able to get out to visit a friend. ƒ I understand swine flu is coming around again. Peggy Sale told me that her sister-in-law, Gloria Sale of Dewy Rose, has been very sick and found out that she has swine flu. So keep spraying that Lysol and washing your hands.

ƒAlex and Kay Tyler went to Elberton Tuesday, February 23, to see their grandson, Jordan Tyler, a member of the Jefferson School tennis team, play and win in the tennis match there. He went on to Hartwell last Friday and won all his matches there also. One day, a week or so ago, Jordan played a tennis match and his dad, Greg Tyler, was also playing a tennis match on the same day. ƒSara Frances Henderson and Pat Mack enjoyed the singing at Anthony's Chapel Saturday night. ƒDale and Kathy Roberts of Winder visited with Louie and Vivian Wolozin Sunday. Vivian is not doing well, so let's keep her in our prayers. ƒSpending the weekend with Hugh and Nobie Keener was Vince Keener of Snellville. ƒCongratulations to Greg Callaway, grandson of Leon and Linda Aycock and Otis and Pat Callaway. He was a grand champion winner at the steer show here Saturday in Wilkes County with five counties competing. He won a second place with another steer. Greg had many friends and family here especially to see him compete. Those coming from outof town especially for this show were Gordon and Jewell Brown, Chip and Selena House, Gracen and Raleymae, all of North Carolina and Danny Aycock and Doug Aycock and friend Pam, all of Lincolnton. Of course, Greg's parents, Brian and Tonya, and grandparents, Leon and Linda Aycock and Otis and Pat Callaway, all were there to support him. Saturday night there was a celebration dinner at the Jockey Club with all the people above and joining them were Melanie Reeves and Chris Charping and Amber Woods of Lincolnton. The weekend before, Greg competed in the state show in Perry and placed second with both steers. ƒRevival services will be held at Tignall Baptist Church beginning Sunday night, March 28, and continuing through Wednesday, March 21, with Rev. Phil Bray of Dearing speaking and Rev. Gary Purvis leading the music. Everyone is welcome. ƒWe extend sympathy to Bill Savage. His nephew, Frank Savage, of Lincolnton passed away last week. ƒLet's keep the following people in our prayers: Myrline Thornton, Frances Vinson, Vivian Wolozin, Charles Pullen, Shirley Roberson, Louise Denard, Carol McTier, Esther Dawson, Kathryn Anderson, Patsy Epps, Freddy Brown, Ginny Barnett, Randy Butts, Teresa Saggus, Marvin Weaver, Tim Echols, Billy Burton and Mike Johnson. ƒDouglas Couch from the Georgia Baptist Foundation will be at Mallorysville Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, March 21, at 1:30 p.m. He can help you with investing church money, help with wills and annuities. Everyone is welcome. ƒDon't forget to get news to me on Sunday nights for a few weeks. I found there to be one advantage in working. Now I know what day it is. In retirement every day is Saturday or Sunday. I definitely know when it is Friday now.
