Baseball Tigers win opener, drop next two; Murray and Martin get season’s first homers

The W-W Tiger baseball season opened up with a win against Jefferson County 6-1 as Trey McAvoy struck out 14 batters and gave up no earned runs in five impressive innings of work last week. D.J. Barnett pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings to close out the game. Zach Murray broke the game open for the Tigers when he hit his first homerun of the season.

On Friday, February 26, the Tigers lost to Elbert County 12-2. Robert McGill suffered the loss on the mound but allowed only 4 earned runs. Trent Martin hit his first homerun of the season for the Tigers.

It wasn’t much better on Saturday as the Tigers again fell short to the Blue Devils by the score of 11-5. Barnett made his first start on the mound for the Tigers pitching four innings and allowing no earned runs. McAvoy suffered the loss in relief of Barnett.

The Tigers were tied 5-5 going into the seventh inning but a couple of misplayed fly balls allowed Elbert to rally for six runs in the top of the frame to win the game. The Tiger defense committed seven errors in game.

The Tigers hosted Morgan County on Wednesday and are travelling to Hebron today. Friday’s game against Wilkinson County has been cancelled because Wilkinson is still involved in the state basketball playoffs.
