Exceptional Children’s Week (ECW) was celebrated March 1-5. The special education teachers and administration showed appreciation for all that is done at W-WMS for our special needs children by organizing activities for teachers and staff. All the teachers and staff were allowed to dress down and received a pass to enjoy lunch or their planning period off campus. At the end of the week, teachers and staff were treated to a delicious lunch of deli sandwiches, chips and desserts.

Students in Debbie McLeod’s eighth grade language arts class recently read Animal Farm, by George Orwell, which is a political allegory of the Russian Revolution. The students were given choices for their book report: give an oral report about a courageous human rights fighter; make a collage of status symbols; make cartoon sketches of the funniest scenes in the book; or read and analyze related poems from a select list.

Over the past month, the student body has written many essays and now they are able to share them with the community, state, and nation. The students have participated in the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition which gives the students a chance to share their written works of art. The competition is for students in grades 1-12. Three essays from each grade level were selected by teachers for the competition. The W-WMS winners and their essay topics are: in the sixth grade, Lasharra Owens with “Who Will I Be….;” in seventh grade, Kasey Gowen with “The Invasion;” and in eighth grade, Jess Baumert with “ Our New World.” Congratulations to these students whose papers will be judged at the next level of the competition.
