Tigers beat Morgan Co. in one-hitter; errors mar game at Hebron Christian
The Washington-Wilkes Tiger baseball team split a pair of games during the past week before beginning a three-game week on Monday at Morgan County. Results of this week’s games will be reported as they are made available.
Last Wednesday, the Tigers hosted the Morgan County Bulldogs and took care of business with a sound 4-1 win. Zach Murray got the start on the mound and went five innings allowing no runs to get his first win of the young season. Trey McAvoy took over in the final two frames and logged his first save of the year. The two Tiger pitchers gave up only one hit in the game.
Leading the offensive attack for W-W was Whit Winfrey who went 2-for-4 at the plate while driving in three of the Tigers’ four runs.
A road trip the next day didn’t turn out so well for the Tigers. At Hebron Christian Academy in Dacula, a plague of errors and a sluggish offense saw W-W succumb to the mercy rule, 1-15.
Robert McGill started on the mound for the second time this year.
In the top of the first, the Tigers got a slight early lead on a pair of singles by McGill and McAvoy. But all that went away when Hebron came to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Hebron took control of the game scoring 10 runs in the first (all unearned) on two Tiger errors on plays that would have gotten W-W out of the inning unscathed. David Martin pitched three scoreless innings in relief of McGill before allowing five more runs in the fifth to have the game called.
Collecting hits for the Tigers were Blake Connell, McGill, Murray, and McAvoy with an RBI.
After games with Morgan and Twiggs earlier this week, the Tigers will host Aquinas on Friday, March 12, beginning at 5 p.m.
