Washington Fire Chief Alan Poss (left) was the guest speaker for the March 9 meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club. In 1978, Poss was one of the first paid Fire Department employees in the city and in 1981 he became the youngest fire chief in Georgia and only the third chief of the Washington Fire Department. Poss told the group that the mission of the fire department has grown from one of mostly fire suppression to include rescue and training. He explained how the hard work of the fire department and the city help obtain an ISO rating of Class 3 for the City of Washington which helps lower home owners insurance premiums. Poss finished his presentation by relating some of the work the Washington Fire Department and Wilkes County are doing to help with firefighting in the county through the use of water impoundments strategically located throughout the county. Harris Blackmon was program chairman.
