Betty Slaton presents “Fun with Our Ancestors” at DAR meeting

Joanne Pollock (left) introduces speaker Betty Slaton. Joanne Pollock (left) introduces speaker Betty Slaton. Betty Slaton presented the program, “Fun with Our Ancestors,” at the Kettle Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meeting Monday, March 15, at the Woman’s Club.

In her program, Miss Slaton noted interesting facts concerning our patriotic ancestors. Miss Slaton is a retired social studies teacher having taught in Elberton, Athens and Gainesville. She is an active member of the local DAR chapter having served as regent and is presently chapter registrar. She is a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Colonial Dames, the Huguenot Society, the Georgia Trust of Historic Preservation and Questors. She has received several historical awards and is an interesting and informed speaker of historical events.

Prior to her program Laura Toburen, vice-regent, presided in the absence of the regent, Anneice Butler, and called the meeting to order. Ginny Broome, chaplain, led the chapter in the opening rituals and offered the blessing for the delicious buffet meal.

Hostesses for the meeting were Millie Arnold and Maxine Singleton.

Following the luncheon and program, the business meeting was held. Mrs. Arnold presented the national defense message and reported on the U.S. Navy hospital ship that recently assisted with the care of victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Other business followed and included a report from Lillie Crowe who announced that during the recent Battle of Kettle Creek Celebration there were four poster contest winners among the local school children. She also mentioned the quilt exhibit that will be held at the Mary Willis Library during the upcoming Tour of Homes.

Nina Albea reminded members to bring soup labels for the Tamassee DAR School. Members were also reminded that Phyllis Scarborough will collect money for the summer veterans program at the April meeting.
